Mapnik is used more and more by professional cartographers.
There is a real need to create GeoTiffs from Mapnik.
GeoTiff is a fileformat like Tiff but includes spatial reference.
At least Mapnik should support tiff + tfw -world file.

I've started to implement writing geotiffs. For now i've added only tiff output for a start, as the image_util.cpp stuff need a proper refactoring in order to be able to save image projection and extents.
Anyway here are some changes that may be of interests: e011cab
In order to proper save geotiffs, we need to access the map variables from within save_to_file, but that should know nothing about any map that generated the image.
How could we engineer this in a proper way ?

drop unsupported geotiff output - refs #967
I've removed the geotiff encoding support for now in 9d5e46a - it lacks tests and is too hardcoded to be useful. And honestly I think geotiff support is out of scope for Mapnik: it is better added as a postprocessing step if needed.
