gnome-settings-daemon does not get started in Ubuntu 12.04 #2
Comments
Try adding "MATE;" to the OnlyShowIn line in gnome-settings-daemon.desktop. |
I'm still wondering why it got started before, and why we need it. |
I also get Unable to start the settings manager 'mate-settings-daemon'. when I try to change the appearance. (with and without gnome-settings-daemon running) |
Some screenshots to illustrate it: |
I just tried to duplicate this issue on a fresh install of the second precise beta. At first everything looked perfect. It wasn't until I tried running mate-settings-daemon and then gnome-settings-daemon from the terminal that everything looked as it does in your first screenshot. I then rebooted and everything was back to normal. When I tried running those commands from the terminal I also received the same output you did in your second screenshot. My after installation screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/EC3MR.jpg Did your desktop looked messed up immediately after installing MATE or did it only happen after trying to use gnome-settings-daemon and/or mate-settings-daemon from the terminal? |
Hm, I'll try to reproduce it on a fresh installation, this VM was upgraded from oneiric to precise Alpha and from then on continuously, maybe something broke in the process. |
Ok, I've did a fresh install from netinstall with mate-desktop-enviroment and lightdm, it doesn't happen with this setup, so I guess it can be marked as invalid. |
With the latest beta release of Ubuntu precise, gnome-settings-daemon won't start automatically with the mate session as it did in 11.10. (This is a bit odd as /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop didn't change since oneiric)
This causes the design to be broken (missing icons and themes) which gets displayed properly after manually running gnome-settings-daemon and restarting caja and mate-panel.
