When the first element after a line break would have spacing on the left, that spacing can cause the line to be indented. For example

\sin(x) \\ \sin(x)

has the second line indented slightly.

The line breaking code tries to remove this space for the first element, but it turns out the empty <mo> that causes the line break is the first element, so the algorithm needs to be altered to ignore the <mo> in this case.
