The TeXbook says that

\left(\Rule{1em}{1em}{.5em}\right)

should be equivalent to

\mathinner{\Bigl(\Rule{1em}{1em}{.5em}\Bigr)}

but the first one doesn't get tex class INNER. So the spacing between it and a preceding or following symbol (e.g., an x) would not be the same.
