I had to make a few changes to fit our environment see here.
Passes the SetupTools tests.

Inside a new Jupyter session:
Following the proxy shortcut I get to the 'Status Information' page.

MATLAB Status:	Not running
Licensing:	Network License Manager (/opt/nesi/share/MATLAB/Licenses/apps.lic)

Clicking confirm takes me back to the status screen.
Repeating this again gives:

(The TypeError happens when the proxy starts, there is nothing in the log that corresponds to the 'communication with server' error.)

@CallumWalley is there any chance you can try and get our unmodified integrated into your system? I believe that all you need to do (looking at your changes) would be to ensure there is an executable on the system PATH called matlab, which you could ensure by setting the PATH environment variable. In addition, if you ensure that the environment variable MLM_LICENSE_FILE is set we will pick that up.

What is weird about the stack trace above is that none of our code appears in the traceback (it's all in the jupyter_server_proxy package which is what hosts our plug-in). Also weirdly you can see that some previous calls to routes we make available in our code (e.g. /user/cwal219/matlab/static/media/mathworks.37a563ef.woff) appear to return successfully.

One trick we use a lot is to look at the process listing inside the container to ensure that MATLAB has started and is running - you should see some of the general output from a MATLAB startup in the JupyterHub log.

Also - to help you I've posted the JupyterHub docker container output I get from running an R2020b version of MATLAB with a license file (i.e. setting MLM_LICENSE_FILE to point to an actual license file). The output below starts from the moment I click the "MATLAB" in New notebook menu on the main JupyterHub page. I note in this log output there is no attempt to GET manifest.json.

Hey Jos, thanks for the reply.

Firstly, apologies i'm not that familiar with aiohttp/react.
I'm not currently using a containerised version of MATLAB, just the standard install on centos7, is this a problem? I could probably convert the Docker image to Singularity (the containerisation software used in HPC), but it would be a bit of a pain, so would like to avoid for now if possible.

I'm relatively confident that matlab is on path, the wrapper script should do that before launching matlab-jupyter-app.

The first noticeable thing to is getting a 404 from the /start_matlab endpoint, when launching the servers as described in Development_Customization_Info.md both server seem to launch fine, so presumably the problem is with whatever launches MATLAB itself?

Would be really good to talk this over with someone, had meeting with Nick Choi a couple of months back maybe I should follow up with him?

Further debugging shows that this issue relates to the hardcoded use of X display :1 in jupyter-matlab-proxy.
Callum has temporarily worked around this by updating the display to a much larger value with a lower probability of being taken by another user or process.

A fix for making the display selection dynamic is underway, I'll link the PR to this issue once its available.
