Unable to pickle histogram figure #1926

As per the comment on stackoverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4348733/saving-interactive-matplotlib-figures), I am reporting an issue to do with pickling. I get the following stack trace when I try to pickle:

Calling code is:

pickle.dump(obj, output)

where obj is a histogram plot created by:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

figure = plt.hist(data)
