This applies similar changes for annotations as we did for edits (#11660, threads (#11752), and annotations (#14491) -- namely we make a query per group of events instead of per individual event.

This doesn't apply a limit for the number of references to include, but this actually matches the spec:

The aggregation format of m.reference relations consists of a single chunk property, which lists all the events which m.reference the event (the parent).

Amazing! 😍

Using the artificial Complement test from matrix-org/complement#443 which has zero relations, get_bundled_aggregations is down from ~1000ms -> ~50ms!

We deleted the one in the handler, not the one in the store.

Batch fetch bundled references (#14508)

Avoid an n+1 query problem and fetch the bundled aggregations for
m.reference relations in a single query instead of a query per event.

This applies similar logic for as was previously done for edits in
8b309ad (#11660; threads
in b65acea (#11752); and
annotations in 1799a54 (#14491).
