The web is moving to https anyway and openlibrary already uses https.

Thanks, I also prefer HTTPS too. {^_^}

But more objectively, HTTPS avoid MITM attacks, so it is an additional protection against content corruption. In the case of DOI, one might get a corrupted redirection to a wrong paper for example. So although minor, it is still a security improvement.
