Installation on Heroku

The simplest way to get the application installed is using a free instance of Heroku. After downloading the code:

  1. Install the Heroku Toolbelt
  2. Copy the code to your local machine (unzip it somewhere if you need to)
  3. cd to the directory where your put the code.
  4. Setup git source control:
  • git init
  • git add .
  • git commit -m 'my first commit'
  1. Put the application on Heroku:
  • create a new application on heroku: heroku new <app name>. Application names must be universally unique, but if prepend it with your City and State (i.e., heroku new DC-Washington-data-dictionary) you'll probably be in good shape.
  • install the code: git push heroku master this will take a few minutes. When it's done your URL will be https://<app name>
  1. Setup the database: heroku run rake db:migrate
  2. Add some configuration data: heroku run rake db:migrate

You can now go to your application! Click on the 'Sources' link to add some Data Sources and Sets, and then click on 'Map' to see your application in action!
