Franz launches, and I see the thumbnail in win10 taskbar. But I don't get the window to show, not even with the "cascade all windows" trick in the taskbar. Reinstalling etc...

Expected Behavior

Launching franz window should be either in center or on previous location

Current Behavior

See stepds to repro

Steps to Reproduce (for bugs)

  1. Launch Franz
  2. Close it
  3. Window moves top right top
  4. Repeat process until it no longer shows and is out of bounds

Context

Since beta 12

Your Environment

  • Franz Version used: 5.0 beta12
  • Operating System and version: Windows 10

I can't reproduce the issue. Whenever I restart the app or just restore the window. It is opened at the same position it was before.

Is anyone else having this issue on Windows 10?

Hi.
I had this problem back in the 4.0.4 version on Win7, but It might be the same problem.

I guess Franz sometimes bugs out and places the window "outside" of the desktop since I've found the .JSON files that stored the last state of the window(I guess a check to make sure they can't be outside of the window is either missing or gets skipped cuz of a bug at times) and had to modify the "overly negative" X and Y variables.

Looking at those files they aren't used anymore so those won't help. On my Win7 system I could also fix it by maximizing Franz with Win+Enter and dragging it around, but no idea if that helps with Win10.

@adlk I'm glad if I can help. :)
You mean monitors? No I only use one standard 1080p monitor through a DVI cable. Nothing fancy.

Problem

I experience the same problem. Some times I use multiple screens.
I get the preview of the window but when I click the task icon nothing is displayed.

image

Workaround

I worked around this issue by uninstalling Franz and removing the app's directory:
%AppData%\Roaming\Franz

System

  • Windows 10 64 Bit
  • Franz 5 beta.13

A clean install is not necessary. As @Gaboris described correctly, there is a .json config that takes care of the window position.

If this problem happens again (before I have a fix for it) go to %AppData%\Roaming\Franz\settings and delete the window-state.json.

First, I just love Franz, my compliments! Although I've had this problem a number of times over the past few months, on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, even with the newest 5.0.0 beta .13 version which I downloaded yesterday (Nov 15th, 2017). But now that I know that deleting the window-state.json file solves the problem it's not so critical, however please do look into this issue as it is still occurring. Thanks!!

The path to that file is not correct. %AppData% goes to /Roaming automatically, so the path should just be %AppData%/Franz, where you can find window-state.json and delete it (so the settings portion is also not relevant).

Here's a batch script that will fix the issue and restart Franz:

taskkill /IM franz.exe /F
cd %AppData%\Franz
del window-state.json
start "" "%LocalAppData%/Programs/franz/Franz.exe"

I have 4 monitors, deleting the file window-state.json does not fix the problem for me.

I have 3 in a row, and a 4th one which is located above the right-most monitor. Forming an L that lays on its side.

Can you please advise?

The current solution is to unplug all my monitors.

@jeffward01 Deleting the file fixed the problem with my 3-monitor setup. Did you quit franz before deleting the file?

@jakelauer yes i have tried that, I have stopped franz, quit any franz related tasks, and then erased the window-state.json file.

Then I re-open franz and still cannot see franz. Only solution is to unplug my monitors.

I LOVE franz, but this is annoying..... Sadly makes me not want to use it... I would gladly pay for a solution, this software is great.

I think its because I have 4 monitors... My Monitors are shaped like an L laying on its 'right' side.

we are actively investigating the issue ... see #495 for an interesting workaround on Windows (for now) by using alt+space to open the window context menu (same as clicking on app icon in the title bar on the upper-left corner of the window) and then press the accelerator (&) key for "&Move" in your language (e.g. &Verschieben) then use the arrow key (or mouse afterwards) to move the window back to visible screen estate. alternatively use this guide: https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/quick-tip-move-a-window-back-into-view-from-outside-the-display/

could just reproduce the issue for the first time ... tower PC with Windows 7, Franz on second monitor -> unplug -> Franz stays "invisible" on second monitor

with a click on its systray icon though, Franz returned to the first monitor ... did anyone use this trick (if it is one)?

Same issue here, also have a multiple monitor setup at home (two monitors) which I regularly connect/disconnect from. When away, Franz will open in non existing window space. Deleting the JSON file is an OK workaround for me but it would be nice to have a solution. Maybe it's an option to store the display profile information (number of monitors / size / position?) in the state file and not use it when Franz detects a change in the setup when it opens?

I also have the problem:

to reproduce:

  • open franz
  • install new graphiccard driver
  • click on maximize button of the franz window
  • window will move to a non existing display and can't be moved back by Win+Arrowkeys

Found 2 more ways to reproduce the error.

When using multiple monitors in extended mode with screen stacked on top of eachother

  • Open Franz
  • Change default screen.
  • Franz will now open off screen

Workaround with the Move function from window still works. CTRL + SPACE + R (for Dutch) probably M for English. I think the shortcut key is different per language

When working at home I often use RDP to connect to my work laptop from my home PC using 2 screens. Using the RDP option to "use all monitors" when connecting.

  • Connect to laptop using RDP multi monitor setting
  • Open Franz
  • Disconnect RDP
  • Reconnect without multi monitor setting
  • Franz will now open off screen

I'm having the issue too. I also have a multiple monitor setup at work and even a clean install doesn't solve the problem. The only way to solve it is deleting de json file.

Hey!
I have much worse Franz behavior as is starts up an than happenes nothing. It is not appears as icon in task bar or anything else. The only way i can find it, is as process in task manager. Deleting .json file didnt help, reconnect second monitor not workin either. The only way to make it work is reinstall. Win 8.1 pro.

In screenshot is how it looks for me.

I dont know the exact order of steps to reproduce that bug, but im sure it's somehow related to use of second monitor.

Keep up the good work

So I just ran into this issue recently, and deleting window-state.json file worked. Woot, thanks!

However, I wonder if I might offer random thoughts.

I believe that this happened to me because Franz was on and open when I updated my GFX card drivers. During the installation for the driver my screens flash, and I have a feeling that at some point the windows layout engine is temporarily given only one screen or even NO screens. Maybe this messes with your windows position calculations?

It feels to me like you have two choices to address this. Either have a timer that intermittently checks window position relative to screen bounds and ensures that it at least enough of the header bar is visible at all times to allow for moving the window around.

Or, use a standard Windows window. I could be wrong about this, but I seem to recall Windows always ensuring my windows were visible within the available screen real estate. I feel like the window you're using is some kind of tool window of some sort? The reason I believe so is most windows when I hover over the task icon and see the window preview, I can right click on the window preview and select "move" for example. However right clicking on the Franz window simply dismisses the preview as if the right click is blocked somehow, and doesn't grant me access to the typical context menu.

I am on Win10 Pro.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce this issue yet on my testing setup.
Starting with beta 20, if you right-click the Franz Taskbar item, you can select to "Reset the Franz Window". This will position the window at x: 0, y: 0 and resets the window width and height to the default state.

Please let me know if this works for you!

@adlk If you use a windows pc: Just install via nvidia experience a driver update. While the process is running, it will reset your displays (you have to have multiple displays) and I think franz have to be open or minimized for this. I can't remember at what point I got the bug myself. (I think opened)

After this, the window was unresponsive or it disappeared completly and never come back(restart didn't help). After deleting the file mentions above, it worked fine again.

Also I can't remember if I had franz on my main or second display, but I think it was on my second.

@ilyasobol i have the same problem on my pc. I'm having 3 monitors connected, and after i had reset my pc, i first installed franz and it worked. then i installed my graphics card driver for my GTX 1060 and the window didn't open up but showed in the taskmanager. I didn't find a solution for the problem yet, reinstalling or deleting the window-state.json didn't work either, so i'm still searching for a solution

I have the same issue. Franz is not showing up anywhere. When I start the task manager, I can see the Franz process running. I am running Windows 10 with two monitors. The funny thing is it used to run perfectly. I have tried deleting the JSON file and reinstalling. Nothing works.
