h1. 2.0 backup/restore functional spec
In general, the 2.0 backup/restore command-line parameters try to stay
compatible with the 1.8 backup/restore command-line parameters. New
2.0 flags are marked below.

h3. parameter: source
The source can be a URL (like, http://HOST:8091) to backup a Couchbase
cluster with TAP dump (1.8 or 2.0). Or, the source can be a local
bucket data directory (for 2.0) to backup the bucket data from a
single server node.

When the source parameter is a local bucket data directory, cbbackup
will look for key files in the bucket data directory to double-check
that it's a correct 2.0 bucket data directory.
h3. parameter: backup_dir
The backup_dir should either be empty or not created yet (but its
parent directory should exist). The cbbackup tool will create the
backup_dir if needed.
The backup_dir is created on the local filesystem (which of course can
be a network drive). To be clear, the backup_dir is NOT created on
the remote couchbase server node.

Currently (2.0), key filtering via the --key=KEY parameter is done on the client-side,
not on the server-side. For example, you might have a really tight key filter that
just gets a single item -- but the cbbackup tool will TAP all items and "throw away"
the filtered out items.

** Note that you could only use the direct local file access variant
of cbbackup.
** Or, you could have just cp'ed or tarball'ed up the data directory, too,
and not actually needed to use cbbackup. This can be much faster,
and direct file copying should work even when the server node is
online. Direct file copying, however, can only be directly restored against
an offline destination cluster that has the same topology (number of nodes)
where the files need to be carefully copied to the right nodes where the
cluster has the same vbucket map.
** Using cbbackup, however, transforms the data into the backup_dir
file format that allows for partial data restores (e.g., filtering by
key, vbucket_id; set-vs-add semantics, etc) to an online destination
cluster using cbrestore, where the destination cluster may have a different
topology.
** Additionally using cbbackup of couchstore-files:// instead of direct
file copying will reduce the file size -- in essence performing a form
of compaction.
h2. cbrestore

The cbrestore tools restores a single bucket's data from a previous
backup_dir to a destination couchbase cluster. The destination
cluster must be online, and the destination bucket must have been
already created before running cbrestore.
Note that a backup_dir might contain items from multiple buckets,
because cbbackup might have be run against a multi-bucket cluster. To
restore every bucket, then, cbrestore must be run multiple times, once
for every bucket in the backup_dir.
h3. parameter: backup_dir
This is the backup_dir from a previous cbbackup run.
h3. parameter: destination
The parameter destination allows the user to specify the target
cluster for a restore. It should be a REST URL to a couchbase
cluster.

h2. cbtransfer
The cbbackup/cbrestore tools are just edge cases of the more generic
cbtransfer tool. Please see the cbtransfer-func-spec.jira for more
information.
h2. threading
The cbbackup/cbrestore/cbtransfer tools support an optional -t or
--threads parameter to control the concurrency of the program. The
max concurrency, however, is limited by the actual number of nodes or
servers in the cluster. That is, the tools will not create more
connections than the number of servers, as data needs to be transfered
in ordered, sequential fashion.
For example, backing up a 2 node cluster will not create more than 2
client connections, even though you might specify --threads=100.
h2. authentication/authorization
If you're just doing cbbackup/cbrestore/cbtransfer against only the
default bucket, you don't need to supply a username or password.
However, if you have a multiple-bucket configuration or don't have a
default bucket, you MUST supply a REST administrator username &
password (so that the tools can successfully retrieve information on
all buckets). Otherwise, the couchbase server just returns
information on the default bucket only.
There are three ways to specify username & password.
* Command-line flags: \--username=USERNAME (or -u USERNAME) and \--password=PASSWORD (or -p PASSWORD)
* In-line in a URL: http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT
* Environment variables: CB_REST_USERNAME and CB_REST_PASSWORD
** Environment variables do not show up on ps or top output.
h2. errors
The final errors may change -- these are representative of the kinds
of error cases to consider...
* destination path already contains a backup
* source path incorrect
* could not create backup directory
* could not connect to backup source
* could not connect to restore destination
* wrong user (please use couchbase user)
* cluster is still running
* not enough backup disk space based on estimates
* not enough restore disk space based on estimates
* out of disk space
* backup is corrupted
* lost connection
h2. seqNumber, revId metadata
TAP-based backup will backup engine-specific metadata including the
seqNumber and revId and NRU information. However, SET-WITH-META-based
restore will restore only the seqNumber and revID (CAS), but not
restore the NRU information. NRU means (roughly) "near recently
used".
A regular SET-based restore (not using SET-WITH-META) would not
restore any seqNumber or revId or CAS information.
h2. avoiding SET-WITH-META
Perhaps you're trying to restore to a server that does not support
SET-WITH-META. (Please see the server compatibility information
below.)
In that case, you can use the extra "-x try_xwm=0" option to force the
cbrestore/cbtransfer tool to _not_ use SET-WITH-META (or, any
xxx-WITH-META protocol). Instead, the cbrestore/cbtransfer tool will
use just plain SET protocol, which should work with 1.8 and 2.0DP4.
h2. using GET instead of SET/SET-WITH-META
During a cbtransfer, instead of using mutation operations (SET/ADD or
SET-WITH-META/ADD-WITH-META), cbtransfer can support using GET as the
operation, via the "--destination-operation=get" parameter.
This can be useful to bring "hot" items into memory, as the sequence
of messages in a TAP-dump-based backup file are ordered by in-memory
items coming first.
