Any idea when this functionality will be available? I'm ready to implement some plugins when it is. Also note that it should preferably be possible to change both the default set of columns shown, and the set shown for specific directories.
I can't say precisely, I'm sorry. I am aware of the importance of this feature. But there are still many others with more votes ahead of it. I will strive to get to it soon.

At the moment, there are API functions for retrieving the current columns and for changing the columns' sort order. What's not yet available is a function that lets you add or remove columns to be displayed. This is required to let plugin developers define (and use) their own columns for existing file systems.
