JRuby 1.7.3 gives this error when installing: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Psych::SyntaxError)
(): 'reader' unacceptable character '' (0x87) special characters are not allowed
in "'reader'", position 164 at line 0 column 0

Changed to 'c', built gem and installed just fine.

Bug in either RubyGems or Psych. My gemspec has the encoding: utf-8 directive, signifying that the contents of the gemspec may have Unicode characters. I won't change my name to appease software bugs.

Which will_paginate version did you try to install when you got the error?

Version 3.0.4. Google search turned up similar errors with special characters in gemspec not installing in JRuby. I understand your reasoning, and I was able to work around the issue by changing the character myself.
