So, in all the other importers, the extract function is called on the data before the importer returns it.
What is the intended use here?

As I mentioned in the commit comment: Sometimes you want to have access to the raw data. E.g. when you want to get the updated time via data.feed.updated.$t.

I'm sorry but could I trouble you for an example of this? I'm failing to envision a use case at the moment but I'm sure you have a valid one.

In the bottom right corner of e.g. http://maps.nzzdali.ch/abstimmungen/#single/juni2013/hooligan we display the date and time the spreadsheet was updated.
