Also use show_values instead of BUFFER_SIZE / 6 since the remaining bytes is what matters to check whether the data was truncated or not
Remove the not_written variable which contained the return value and return immediately if there are no bytes available. This makes some validation code redundant and allows for making the code smaller and more clear.
I misunderstood the manual on the result values of snprintf, it does not return the number of unwritten bytes (which I expected), but the number of written bytes or -1 on failure
