I got

[hjl@gnu-cfl-1 gmp]$ git fetch origin
searching for changes
no changes found
fatal: Branch name doesn't conform to GIT standards: hg/origin/refs/tags/gmp-3_0___**FUNKY**
fast-import: dumping crash report to .git/fast_import_crash_2922933
fatal: error while running fast-import
[hjl@gnu-cfl-1 gmp]$

This is similar to felipec#7.
