In order to allow the IDE to syntax highlight and understand code (as well as features like auto-completion) we need to be able to construct abstract syntax trees representing partial snippets of Lua code.

The IDE also needs to be able to simulate execution of those partial snippets (snippets must be able to be executed if they aren't normally considered valid Lua code) so that we can detect what kind of types might be in a variable at runtime.
