"No such device" when the aufs module is not loaded (or absent) #183

This is a known issue when the aufs module is not loaded. This usually means you don't have the right version of the ubuntu linux kernel package installed.

Suggestions:

  • look for aufs in /proc/filesystems
  • if not found, try modprobe aufs (after all, we're root)
  • if after that, we still don't have aufs in /proc/filesystems, abort, or at least issue an obnoxious warning
