We can see changes to the document with DOM* events. These are said to affect performance, so polling might actually be better when there's lots of activity. But when there isn't activity (the polling results in no changes), or when no one is even looking (background tab), we could do no polling and use those DOM events (removing the listeners once activity starts up again).

It's also possible the DOM events will always be a useful decrease in latency.
