Because if you try to read "something something.pdf" you would end up with command like java -server -Djava.awt.headless=true -jar tika-app-0.10.jar something something.pdf which raises an error, the fix is to use the path to file enclosed in "'s and include protocol like this java -server -Djava.awt.headless=true -jar tika-app-0.10.jar 'file://something something.pdf'

You're welcome! I still use it in one of my apps because having a separate heroku instance strictly for running nailgun+tika is out of budget for a small project.
