e.g.

> git submodule add http://github.com/ryppl/ryppl.git .dependencies\ryppl
fatal: Could not switch to '.git/modules/.dependencies\': No such file or directory
Clone of 'http://github.com/ryppl/ryppl.git' into submodule path '.dependencies\ryppl' failed

If I use forward slashes, it works.

The solution is most likely to use forward-slashes as on every other OS :-)
