I know, it's 4 reasonably well labeled boxes, I can't believe I'm requesting this.

I use Mumble for gaming and it seems many people struggle with matching the given details to the input boxes.

I expect people are somehow glancing at 'Username' and reading 'Password' since they expect the last field to be the password and they're of a similar length. I'd recommend also having the password field in the Add Server dialog so they don't make this assumption and so there isn't another dialog.

They don't immediately know what a label is, perhaps add a tooltip or help text underneath the text input to explain it.

I don't think it's actually possible to simplify the new server dialog more than it actually is...
current dialog
I agree that it would be nice to set the password in this dialog instead of another one tho.

Renaming the first box from "Name" to "Label" already was an attempt by us to clarify the use of the fields. From what I can tell it actually helped as the reports decreased.

About adding more information: All the boxes have tool-tips and there's even the "What's this" feature (the "?") for even more information. Displaying more information won't help I'm afraid. Take a look at http://wiki.mumble.info/wiki/Special:RequestAccount and guess how many account requests of people thinking they have to request an account with us to use Mumble we reject daily :(

I'm not sure showing the password box permanently is a good idea either. Users think they actually have a user password (which is why we hid it in the first place. Still shows up for SuperUser) and get confused....

EDIT: Actually I guess I could add placeholder texts. Let me try that

So it's not just the people I'm inviting to my server that are making these mistakes.

Yes, I think placeholder text could be the answer. If you think that will prevent almost everyone from filling the form in wrong maybe the password entry could be put back in this dialog?

Dialog now looks like this:
add server

Hopefully that helps. I would rather not put back the password field by default if we don't have to.

Some users still try to enter a password in that dialog.
Try to make it even more clear what belongs in which field
by adding placeholder texts to the QLineEdits.

Hopefully fixes mumble-voip#1442
