What happens when you 'Put Online'?

this is going to sound silly, but despite using Neard forever, i've never chosen that option. i'm now doing some local development prototyping and would like to just be able to give my machine's IP address and have the other LAN systems see the work for approval rather than having to shlep it to their web servers and all the hooplah with that.

what DOES the Put Online option do? and can i then be visible over the LAN to other browsers? IP and port?
