trail head map, park align highway 9 (P with a road sign along highway 9) for after-hour access. The reserve is open from sunrise to sunset (with 30 minutes grace period, i.e. closes at sunset time + 30 minutes).


Important

  1. You should have trekking poles to protect your knees.
  2. Big Basin HQ has plenty of supplies, food, water, etc.
  3. Stay on the trails! Everyone needs to download Google Map offline map and AllTrails (or other equivalent apps)

Schedule

  • 6AM: leave south bay
  • 7:15AM: arrive at Waddell Beach (both cars)
  • 8:20AM: arrive at Saratoga Gap Route (car 1)
  • 8:30AM: begin hiking
  • 3:00PM: big basin park HQ, 13.7 miles, 5.5 hours walking + 1 hour rest/lunch
  • 3:30PM: eat hot dog, drink coke; leave HQ and march on :(
  • 7:30PM: Waddell Beach, 10 miles, 4 hours
  • 8:30PM: drive to Saratoga Gap Route (car 2)

  • energy bars and lunch, needs to cover 2000+ calories
  • flashlight / headlamp (or use your phone, bring a power bank)
