The idea is well described (with animated gifs) in this vim plugin. The issue with those kind of plugins is that nature of vim where is only single cursor available, so these plugins trying to emulate 'multi cursor' behavior, like in sublimetext.

It would very very awesome to redesign some parts of NeoVim core (if it should?) to make native support of multi-cursor.
