A JSON file is fetched directly from a dedicated branch on GitHub as:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nim-lang/website/map/community_map.json

Example: https://screenshots.firefox.com/WEScqjpDIw38hejr/rawgit.com

This could help picking locations for future events.

Why a dedicated branch for the map?

It'd be nice if we could somehow host the .json file on the wiki somehow, or maybe even a separate repo (can a repo be editable by anyone?)

GitHub doesn't have that, but you can work around it by asking people to send pull requests then merge them automatically using a bot.

@dom96 the dedicated branch is to prevent mixing website commits with additions to the community map. We could also use a dedicated repo but it would provide no additional benefits I suppose. A wiki might be better, if there's a way to fetch the raw page without logging in.

A separate repo will be easier to discover. I would prefer if this was in a separate repo.
