Im running Zenmap on my Windows laptop with x2 VM's on Oracle Virtual Box, both VM's are using a bridged network configuration so have picked up DHCP in my home network.

1 of those VM's is a test vulnerable machine which im attempting to scan with Zenmap from my laptop however it shows the host as down

image

The other VM is a kali linux machine, i attempt the same scan to the same IP using the same parameters and i get a full scan output listing ports and services

image

Should this happen normally? or have i got an issue with either Zenmap or its dependencies(Npcap etc)

i have used my Zenmap on other networks and it has worked fine and produced results.

Anybody have any ideas?

Does your laptop have a route to the target? Can you ping or ncat to the target? What about nmap -Pn --disable-arp-ping -sT -p22 (skip host discovery, just check if we can connect to port 22)?

Hi @dmiller-nmap sorry for the delay, i just came back from holiday.

My laptop is sitting on the same network and gateway as the target, i dont have the VM anymore that was in question, but i have a different one running port 25 but im faced with the same issue anyway.

Zenmap shows the host as down when running the same command as my first post.

image

I can ping the target from my laptop

image

Ncat returns "no connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it"

I did however run the command you provided but against port 25 instead of 22 as this VM isnt running SSH and i do get a result

image

I have no issues when running the nmap commands from my Kali VM also sitting on the same network.
