I would like to see #12293 make it into 8.0.0. Needs at least one more @nodejs/ctc review to land, though (assuming we agree it's semver-major which I personally don't but I totally get that reasonable people may think otherwise).

Updated test build: https://ci-release.nodejs.org/job/iojs+release/1633/

I was going to run this as a release candidate zero (RC.0) but opted against doing so given the open question around potentially delaying the release.

The CTC has voted to move the release date back a few weeks in order to give more time for V8 5.8 among other things. My new target release date for 8.0.0 is May 30th. The new semver-major cutoff date will be May 9th

@abouthiroppy What do you mean? The PR you mention is labelled semver-major, you should comment on it if you think that is not correct (but all deprecations are semver-major).

Quick update: I will be updating this PR and doing another test build tomorrow (on the 26th). The new semver-major cut off date is May 9th so there's still plenty of time to get some things in. After the 9th, however, I'm going to start locking things down.

nodejs/build#718 really need to get this built on centos6 but we're not quite prepared! I'll try and find time to sort that out in the next few hours and do some test builds so we have the option to go either way. Pls comment in that Build thread if this concerns you at all.

Since it seems we're making an effort to remove the 'v' prefix from version numbers, should we be removing them from the API history (YAML) blocks as well?

Okie dokie as per nodejs/build#718 & nodejs/build#740, when building a release with Node >= 8 it'll do it on CentOS 6, on Node < 8 it'll do it on CentOS 5.

I've run a test build of master and a build of v6 and they do the right thing. @jasnell when you do the release or next RC, please look into the console output of all of the centosX build nodes and see which ones shortcut, the centos6 ones should do the proper build, the others should bail early. The logic is all handled in the iojs+release *nix config scripting where we do a bunch of funky stuff to bail early on build nodes that aren't compatible with the version we're building. Pls hit me up via email or IRC if there's any urgent drama with this. 🤞 👌

@Fishrock123 @jasnell awesome, looking forward to reading both of these. I'm especially interested the 6 semver-major changes to assert; I want to make sure people using unit tests to verify compatibility don't get any misleading results.

@rmg ... so far, the one change to assert that I've seen cause the most issues is the addition of the static error code to the error output. e.g. AssertionError [ERR_ASSERTION]: error message. Anyone who is using assert.throws() and uses a regex to verify the error is possibly going to get a failure if they do not account for the additional [ERR_ASSERTION] bit in the output. We had to update our own tests to account for this also. It's going to be a bit of an annoying fix to make but the addition of the static error codes is important and something we're going to be pushing forward on.

The npm5 PR just landed. In a few minutes I'm going to do one final sync from master on semver-patch commits and only selected minors then call it. I'll be doing one more test build, CI, and CITGM run today then will do the release build tomorrow.

@AndreasMadsen Yeah, I think it’s too late. It’s okay; we don’t need to rush the docs in, and it might give us time to work issues in them out before they are released. (Thanks a lot for picking that up, by the way.)
