This results in the error:
Error: require.paths is removed. Use node_modules folders, or the NODE_PATH environment variable instead.

Tested under node.js version v0.8.0-pre with npm version 1.1.30 (git commit bc73abe5a8736359ff69f75948baf61f0431c42c, Jun 23 20:03:00 2012 -0600)

And this, I just discovered, was because I still had a ~/.node_libraries folder installed from an earlier version of node.js and npm. Removing that old folder and re-calling npm install nodemailer corrected the issue.
