Building search index for the first time is painfully slow #2605

When npm builds the search index for the first time, it takes a long time for it to complete. I've tried on two machines and with node/npm versions 0.6.16/1.1.19 and 0.8.1/1.1.35 it takes at least 30 to 40 minutes to complete. What is it that takes so long and does it have to be done on the fly? I suggest some kind of caching mechanism is implemented, e.g. some process is scheduled to rebuild it once every hour or so and always return the latest cached version. This of course assuming the problem lies with npm, it's entirely possible that the problem is local to my machines but I'm lacking the skillz to debug and find the cause.

Anyone else in the community experiencing this?

Thanks for your time,

I don't think a scheduled reindexing as a cron or something would be super welcome or that fun to write/maintain cross platform for npm. 30 minutes is a long ass time though, something is up with those installs or computers. I'm closing this cause its super old but hit us up if it continues.
