I'm trying to install from git.

Can't reproduce. Did you retry later? It may be some network issue (more likely related to git than npm).
This is most likely a git or permission issue
I have a problem only with this package. Any other package installs ok via git. By the way, it's not a permission problem and I can't reproduce it on the Centos 6 machine. Problem affects Ubuntu 12.04.
P.S. It's strange... Repo clones fine, but npm install fails.
cant reproduce on the same ubuntu platform. can you try it with more verbose logging?
