Extensively using NVDA on laptops, I noticed that somme key commands did not work.
So, I'd suggest the following changes, see attached _default_laptop.kbd

My main concern is that on any given keyboard, different keys won't work. What works for your keyboard may not work on other laptops. Have you seen reports from other users and/or had other users test this?

Well, as you know there is a rich variety of laptop keyboards, even using the same language.
So I have tested this one on the 3 laptops we have at home and it works fine on them, but they are all french.

Some comments on what I've done:

  1. some key combinations using home, end, prior next etc did not always work because, in fact, what we have on a laptop are extended keys.
    So home is extendedHome etc.
  2. Key combinations containing "-" like nvda+- or example don't work because, at least on french keyboards, there is no "-" key. The onlè "-" I have is on the 6 key and cannot be adressed this way. So I have used back (backspace) in these combinations to replace the "-".
  3. Over all, in the changes I made, I tried to use keys that exist on any keyboard in all languages.

So I think it should work.
After that, there might be ergonomy problems but in fact we don't have so many keys we can use safely.

Please note a change to the original laptop layout ticket #60 . There are some new additions as well.
I think we should list experiences by all the people reported.

I've just read and tested Peter's _default_laptop2.kbd.
Though it seems nice interm of ergonomy and facility to remember the command, there is a major problem:
At least on my keyboards, commands made of 4 keystrokes, those containing control+shift+nvda followed by another key don't work.
At least, they sometimes work but generally don't.
It seem that the combination control+shift+nvda is not always welle detected.

Uh i thought that four key combinations are okay on all keyboards. I also tryed to use alt+nvda with keys defined in my scheme but it does not work because after the release of alt+nvda combination, the menu bar is alwais activated.. Can this be somehow fixed in the code? Same problem occurs e.g with combination nvda+winlogokey. After the release of this combination, the start menu is activated.

As we really need to settle on a laptop layout that is most suitable very soon -- this week, so that I can start documenting it in the user guide before the beta, I think, we should go with the laptop layout by msuch, attached to this ticket.
Does this layout work ok for people?
Note that #804 (universal layout) will not be done for 2010.2.
