In #448 were made extensive performance benchmarks. In regard to yEnd-decoding the numbers were:

  • decoding on: 238MB/s;
  • decoding off: 337MB/s.

In that case the decoding takes about 30-40% CPU time. Well, these are idealistic numbers because writing of downloaded files into disk were disabled during tests (to minimise influence of disk subsystem during testing).

In another (separate) test with activated disk writing the decoding took 15% of CPU time, which is still a large number (todo: more tests with activated writing).

In this issue: investigate possibilities to improve decoding speed.

Very interesting discussion about using SSE/SIMD instructions to speed up decoding: animetosho/node-yencode#4.
