We still have pages like https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Main_Page that are out of date and replaced by the new website. There's a fairly subtle banner that says "Please visit our NEW OBF/BOSC website: https://www.open-bio.org/" but it doesn't say that the page you're looking at is obsolete.

What we don't want to lose, and haven't figured out how to easily port to the new website, is the historical BOSC pages such as https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/BOSC_2012

I'm not sure what else from the wiki needs to be preserved.

I realize that probably no one will ever actually tackle this, but a short-term easy improvement would be to change the banner to say "This wiki is OBSOLETE -- please go to https://www.open-bio.org/". Does someone remember how to edit the banner? (I don't.)

Due to the old content like old BOSC pages, I don't think we want to turn just off the wiki.

Tweaking the banner seems sensible (I don't know how to do that, have not tried).

Also do you think replacing the content on some key pages like https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/Main_Page with an explicit redirection would make sense?

Would you be open to archiving the wiki content in a github repo? That would reduce "clutter" while preserving content.

I'm not opposed but how would it reduce clutter? (It would perhaps reduce the load on our shared web-hosting server given that we could then take down one Wikimedia site. But I'm not sure it would make a noticeable dent there.)

Exporting the MediaWiki history to a repository is attractive (we used https://github.com/peterjc/mediawiki_to_git_md to move some of the OBF projects to GitHub Pages; some other format could work too), and we might then redirect https://www.open-bio.org/wiki/* to that new location, and turn off MediaWiki?
