"In the vestibular periphery a unique postsynaptic terminal, the calyx, completely covers the basolateral walls of type I hair cells and receives input from multiple ribbon synapses." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4212060/

These are the axon terminals of a type of vesitbular afferent neuron. Another type makes bouton synapses to type II hair cells. [PMID:10706428]
