This evolutionary scenario implies that the amphioxus orovelar muscles and urochordate oral siphon muscles may be homologous to the cyclostome orovelar muscles and gnathostome mandibular muscles, which could potentially explain why these muscles are derived from the CPF only in vertebrates.
