US/Chile

This is an inquiry into alleged crimes of the Pinochet regime. Augusto Pinochet rose to become the junta-appointed dictator of Chile after a US-backed coup d'etat overthrew the democratically elected socialist government. The United States and Britain favoured Pinochet's regime for its similar brand of economic liberalism, while it forcibly interned and "disappeared" thousands of Chileans. He remained a friend of Margaret Thatcher, who praised him for "bringing democracy to Chile".
