fresh Debian 6.0.1 minimal netinstall on 2 Gb RAM, 3Ghz dual core on a much overworked dinosaur

Having failed a few times with debian 5.0.8, I followed the same initial steps for /etc/hosts with Barracuda HEAD on the more modern debian 6. I got this message just after connecting to the debian mirror

...
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openjdk-6-jdk : Depends: openjdk-6-jre (>= 6b18-1.8.3-2+squeeze1) but it is not going to be installed
pdftk : Depends: libitext-java-gcj (>= 2.1.7-2~) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libitext-java-gcj (<= 2.1.7++) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libitext-java but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libbcprov-java but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libbcmail-java but it is not going to be installed

and then this far

...
[Fri Apr  8 12:37:20 BST 2011] ==> INFO: Running hosting-dispatch (3/3), please wait...
[Fri Apr 8 12:37:29 BST 2011] ==> INFO: Simple check if core Aegir Hostmaster instance install is successful
[Fri Apr 8 12:37:33 BST 2011] ==> FATAL ERROR: Something is wrong, core Aegir Hostmaster instance not installed - exit now
[Fri Apr 8 12:37:33 BST 2011] ==> FATAL ERROR: Please check /var/aegir/install.log for more information on errors occured

/opt/tmp/aegir-install.log ended up with some rather unhappy looking messages.

And more /var/aegir/install.log gives

==> This server does not have a hostname that resolves to an IP address

Even though hostname -f does return the FQDN.

Anyway, time to move on so re-installed Debian 6.0.1 minimal, and tried Barracuda STABLE without mucking about with /etc/hosts or /etc/hostname (but checking that hostname -f return the FQDN. Overall, seems like it is just as above.

Thanks to your amazingly quick help - I am going to go back and try debian 5 :) And report back.

I have seen this (unmet dependencies) on some installed from network image Debian 6.0.1 machines, but it didn't break everything, only tomcat. Didn't try to debug it yet, to not break working fine Debian 6.0.0 (which is used on many hosts), but maybe they break something, no idea yet, but it is a bit in a Ubuntu style :/
