When the name "OpenTelemetry" was first picked, there was discussion about reaching out to GitHub to see if github.com/opentelemetry is really active and, if not, if we could switch over. (Here's their name squatting policy.)

Is this an accurate plan and/or has this been attempted yet?

Still discussing that issue. We need help from CNCF but we do make progress

Yeah, some more color on this for others who are curious: our understanding is that github.com/opentelemetry is completely empty, but owned by a "very active" user or organization (or something), so GitHub requires various USPTO things to initiate a transfer process.

If I knew who the current owner was, I would just "ask nicely" (I doubt they'd mind), but I don't have their identity... :-/

Update on this: GitHub does not recognize this as a name squatting and/or trademark violation issue. We are searching for the owner of this organization to establish a conversation.

As far as I know, we haven't been able to find the owner or get them to transfer the organization. Closing this as it appears to be infeasible.
