Which IDE are you using?
Codex desktop app
What platform is your computer?
macOS Tahoe 26.5, MacBook Pro 16-inch, Apple M5 Max, 128 GB memory
What issue are you seeing?
After updating to the latest Codex app, Codex has become significantly slower. The Thinking phase now often takes a very long time before any response appears.
This happens even when Fast mode is enabled, but the actual speed feels much closer to normal Standard mode than Fast mode. Context compaction is also very slow, and the Searching / Reading phases are noticeably slower than before.
I checked status.openai.com and it currently shows Codex as operational, so this does not look like a visible incident on the public status page. Given the hardware above, this also does not seem to be a local machine performance bottleneck.
This is especially frustrating because Fast mode uses more credits / higher usage, but the latency currently feels like Standard mode. In practice, users are paying the higher cost without getting the expected Fast-mode speed.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Update Codex desktop app to Version 26.519.31651 (3017).
- Open a Codex session and enable Fast mode.
- Ask Codex to perform a normal code review, build, or debugging task.
- Observe that the
Thinking phase stays active for a long time before a response appears.
- During longer tasks, observe that context compaction and
Searching / Reading are also much slower than before.
- Compare the latency with previous Codex versions or with the expected difference between Fast mode and Standard mode.
What is the expected behavior?
Fast mode should provide clearly faster turn latency than Standard mode. Thinking, context compaction, and Searching / Reading should not become major bottlenecks when the public status page reports no Codex incident.
Additional information
The slowdown started after updating to Version 26.519.31651 (3017). Screenshots are available for the app version, platform information, and the public status page showing Codex as operational.
