The NOVA classification assigns a group to food products based on how much processing they have been through:

http://archive.wphna.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/WN-2016-7-1-3-28-38-Monteiro-Cannon-Levy-et-al-NOVA.pdf

  • Group 1 - Unprocessed or minimally processed foods
  • Group 2 - Processed culinary ingredients
  • Group 3 - Processed foods
  • Group 4 - Ultra-processed food and drink products

We are going to compute the Nova group for products in the Open Food Facts database, based on their categories, ingredients and additives.

There will be a new facet nova_groups_tags with values:

  • 1-unprocessed-or-minimally-processed-foods
  • 2-processed-culinary-ingredients
  • 3-processed-foods
  • 4-ultra-processed-food-and-drink-products

And a corresponding multilingual taxonomy
