Yes, this is definitely a known bug... At least, in my head ;) and you solution is right, it just requires more refactoring than I would like.
I was also thinking about background mode being based on drawing the glyphs with alpha off, and replacing the alpha portion with a fixed color. Not sure if there's an obvious way to do this with gles though.
