While it's cool to have a "share" concept, the permalinks hidden away. It used to be just right click + copy.

Now it's click some non-obvious icon thing, right click + copy. One extra click to many, IMHO!

The permalinks can be used very often, such as for easily downloading an area in JOSM, among other uses. They are so useful and often used that we should not hide them.

Please put the permalinks back and not hide them. Or at minimum then have them in both places.

The plan is to have the URL bar continuously updating with the location in a fragment, so you can just use that to grab a link.

when will this happen?

Until then, the permalinks should be directly on the page as they were
before.

It's too much inconvenience now. :(

I don't think it's that much of an inconvenience, one extra click. It seems to me that the intention was to hide a feature that not everyone needs (think 80/20 rule), therefore cleaning up the design.

Well, in mediawiki its possible for users to override the js and CSS to
customize and have gadgets. No such thing for osm. :(

Suppose someone could make a chrome plugin or use grease monkey to "fix"
this. Shouldn't be necessary though.

I'd hope most of the people on openstreetmap.org are interested in editing
and in which case the permalink is important. (among other important uses)

@filbertkm Just right-click/copy the View tab in the way that you would have done the Permalink text.

We have now deployed #378 which means the URL bar contents can now be used as an easy permalink.
