If I've previously zoomed in to look at map data and then zoom out I get something like:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=9/53.1443/-0.5699&layers=ND

There's a message "Unable to load map data, too large of an area (3.23). Area must be smaller than 0.25 square degrees." that I can't remove, because I can't untick the box that turns map data on and off.

Would it make sense to automatically untick the box on zoom out?

Auto-uncheck the data and notes layers at low zoom
Reenable them when returning to high zoom in the
same session.

Fixes openstreetmap#592

Is this supposed to be live on www.osm.org or http://api06.dev.openstreetmap.org yet? If so, it's not working for me. If I zoom out from 11 to 10 I get the "unable to display" message but I can't remove it by unticking the "map data" box. Previously, it was ticked and greyed out; now it's unticked and greyed out.

Well it depends how you define "working" really... The message is a feature, not a bug. The inability to uncheck was a bug which John fixed, though he broke the message in doing so and I then fixed the message.

I hadn't actually read the detail of your report so didn't notice that the reason you wanted to uncheck it was to get rid of the message - given that John's fix is not going to work as a solution unless we given up on the message altogether.

Yeah, I think we should probably just remove the message. It's more annoying than helpful, and we never had such a message for notes and nobody's asked for one.
