I found the original description text for the "Add Note" feature very hard to parse on a quick glance so I rewrote it and divided into three distinct one sentence paragraphs for easier reading.

better wording for the Add Note description

The obvious problem here is the extra space that it takes up - it was deliberately intended to be as minimal as possible while still conveying the most important information.

Yeah, this is getting too long. It would help if notes were:

  • Linked from a button that says "Feedback" or "Report a problem"
  • Titled "Improve the map by reporting a problem"
  • Have a little "Public" flag on them
  • Say "Please be descriptive and place the marker precisely" in one line
  • Have a question mark for more info - where we should also explain how to view notes / work with them

Ah, I didn't think of that. I agree. How about the following without linebreaks:

"You can suggest a correction to the map data. Drag the marker to the location in question, then enter your note below. Please be as descriptive and precise as possible so your remarks will be understood by the mappers."

That takes 4 lines on my setup, just as the original.

If the notes being public is important (to me it is implied and does not need to be mentioned), the button could "Add Public Note"

It was a deliberate decision not to call it something like "report a problem" both to avoid people trying to use it to report non map-data related problems and because we didn't want to limit it to "problems" but also to include things like to-do's.

@tomhughes - I've heard as much but 'notes' is really confusing.

As far as I see it, Feedback is less limiting than Report a Problem but easier to understand than Notes.

Though I've heard there's a slightly different en-GB interpretation of the word 'Note' than en-US which could be fixed with a retranslation when/if we get en-US up on translatewiki.

I think this PR can be closed now - the current wording is significantly different from the situation in 2013 and much more like what was proposed here.
