In Wikipedia there is a feature to thanks the user for the edit in the history of an article:

I missed this several times already in the OSM wiki. I guess it is very nice to let people thank you. It's easy and a great way to show appreciation of some work there. 😃

I think you need to identify what makes that happen and then come back and make a concrete proposal for a change - we have no real mediawiki expertise so we have no idea how to turn that on. Most likely it is some extension but we'd need to know which one.

I am not really sure if this is the same issue, but we recently had a discussion about adding the "Thanks" extension to the main wiki (see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Wiki&oldid=1772590#MediaWiki_.22Thanks.22_extension).

The extension allows users to thank others for their edits by clicking a specific button. The other user then receives a message (something like "A thanked you for your contribution on page B"). Currently, many users check other users contributions for spam, errors, ... and thereby also find very helpful edits. However, you usually just contact a user when there is a problem. So, the feedback is basically limited to negative responses. This extension hopefully balances the feedback. I think it is worth to note that every user can individually switch off the notifications.

I will come back with the technical requirements...

Thanks extension requires Echo extension which provides the notification panel. The composer requirements are documented here (linking to MediaWiki's git repos):

Sorry, I am still not sure when an extension's composer configuration works with our setup of Chef. Please let me know if you need additional information.

IN any case, it would be very helpful to reopen this issue, so it does not get lost. 😃
