Both tourism=alpine_hut and amenity=shelter are very useful for alpine paths. Unfortunately no OSM layer shows them. Could Mapnik show those POIs?
I think you are right. They are quite important in the mountains and in these regions you usually don't have cluttering-problems. I suggest to render them from Z13 or 14 and from 15 or 16 with name.

The icon looks great, and is a big enhancement for hikers. But I think that alpine huts still don't get the visibility they deserve. The icon appears only from Z16, and always without name. Furthermore, alpine huts tagged as an area are not rendered with an icon.
As alpine huts usually lie in unpopulated regions, spread over larger areas (peaks are usually thicker than alpine huts), and risk of symbol cluttering is negligible, I suggest to render from Z13 (so they could be still spotted in a map of a whole single day hike), from Z15 with names, and from Z16 with elevation (if available). Also alpine huts tagged as an area should also be displayed with an icon, together with the building outline (like, for example, parking places).
