Trees blitz name labels

I've been experimenting with uploading some open trees data from Southwark Council, but unfortunately the trees mean none of the road and area labels are showing. See attached for a before/after example.

It's great showing the trees here, but the name labels really need to go on top and always show.

Yes we had exactly that problem in Girona when Ivan uploaded thousands of trees, preventing people using the map to find their hotels! (The street name's don't show up: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.98388&lon=2.81927&zoom=16 )

Is this a bug in mapnik itself to do with allowoverlap conflicts, or can it be fixed by simply changing the rendering order?

Rendering order could work, but that would mean creating a style solely for trees. There's another solution possible in newer mapnik versions, but we're not yet targeting those versions.

I noticed this issue after adding trees to this school playground: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.201053&lon=6.61169&zoom=18&layers=M

IMHO the lack of the name labels is a huge issue and should be fixed as quick as possible. (Buildings do not disturb name rendering, so why should trees? http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.201033&lon=6.600661&zoom=18&layers=M)
