A follow-up for #1577, focused on driving, primarily cars / small vehicles, but ideally also trucks and RVs.

Focus on:

  • roads and their types
  • parking
  • chargers for el. cars
  • petrol stations
  • auto-moto club service centers
  • show the current speed limit + warnings
  • speed cameras
  • a choice of alternative routes when planning a trip

Also traffic features like speed bumps/humps, traffic lights.
Road surface quality possibly?

But I wonder what will be the use case for this map view?
Is it for drivers planning a road trip, looking for a parking etc.? But not driving yet.
Because this map view intersects with the existing navigation mode a lot, the difference being the latter having perspective view (could be disabled) and routing directions, etc. But in terms of features priorities its the same.

The navigation mode is different from the road trip planning mode (driver mode). For example, traffic jams can be displayed.

An example of a good map style. Note different colors for different road types, and lining/borders for drawn roads for better visibility.

A perspective view can also be enabled in this mode.

A logical idea is to show traffic signs/speed limits for the current road when the movement direction can be detected.

There is a separate "vehicle" style already which is used in car navigation mode only.
Though its possible to enable it in the normal browsing mode by typing ?vlight in the search box.

It was developed to emphasize driving features, but otherwise reduces map details as much as possible (very few POIs displayed, no distinction in vegetation types, etc.) to avoid attracting too much of driver's attention.
But on the other hand it makes it not very suitable for road trip planning, see

So we're likely to end up with two driving styles: one for planning and another one for the actual navigation (we have the latter already).
