Next turn is not displayed until close to turn #4171
Comments
This has been frequently discussed, and it is a major issue for me too. It seems the main reason to not do it is that it takes up too much screen in landscape. I think it would be helpful to add an "Always show next turn" option, since many seem to be in favor of it but some are opposed. And it is related to the frequent suggestion of a tab to show step-by-step directions. If the "always show next turn" is not added, this could also be a workaround. |
We try to avoid adding unnecessary settings in Organic Maps to avoid it becoming another OSMand. Adding a separate option for this should be the very last resort. A better solution may be always showing the next turn street name/next exit number, or showing it only for highways. Let's start with learning from other popular nav apps, Google and Apple Maps in the first place. What do they show now, in 2024, in similar cases? |
I'm not sure what they show now, I don't have them installed. One easy fix to get the benefit of this without the downsides of blocking screen space in landscape, or needing to re-work everything to look like google/apple/waze would be to check if the device is in portrait mode and always show the info in that case, otherwise keep current behavior. Does that sound good to you? |
That is a good enough temporary solution that can show how useful/important is this feature. Fixing the UI in the landscape mode is the obvious next step. |
Ok, I can see about doing that tomorrow or the day after, or if somebody else wants to do those changes on top of my pr that's totally fine |
Ok, I switched it to always show the next turn text except in landscape. It works great on android, I was able to test it out. Not sure about for iphone but I did my best |
When routing, the name / exit of the next turn is not displayed until the current location is close to (<1 km?) the turning point. This is less of a problem for neighborhood driving, but very inconvenient for highways where knowing the exit number ahead of time is useful.
